„Ce-ți doresc eu ție, dulce Românie”, pare să fie sintagma care l-a animat pe Tokes atunci când, la Budapesta fiind, de 1 decembrie, a declarat că această zi este una de doliu pentru maghiarime, căci aceea a fost data în care Ungaria a pierdut Translivania, în urma aplicării prevederilor Tratatului de la Trianon. De asemenea, între timp, cel considerat declanșatorul Revoluției din decembrie 1989 a transmis și o sugestie autorităților de la București și anume aceea de a schimba data Zilei Naționale. Ideea ex-episcopului reformat a și început să prindă contur. Sâmbătă, 4 decembrie, la Odorheiu secuiesc, Consiliul Național al Maghiarilor din Transilvania (CNMT) a decis să someze de-a dreptul Bucureștiul să mute Ziua Naţională a României la o dată în care şi maghiarii să se regăsească. Potrivit declarațiilor liderului CNMT Mureș, Jakab Istvan, preluate de Agerpres, „având în vedere că maghiarii din România, adică 1,5 milioane de persoane, nu vor avea niciodată motive de sărbătoare pe 1 Decembrie, somăm autorităţile româneşti să mute Ziua naţională a României la o dată în care atât românii, cât şi maghiarii să se regăsească reciproc”. Pe lângă toate acestea, actualul vicepreședinte al Parlamentului European, Tokes Laszlo dorește înființarea unui partid-alternativă la UDMR, Uniunea fiind considerată o entitate care nu (mai) reprezintă interesele autonomiste ale maghiarimii din România. În cadrul aceleiași cuvântări de la Budapesta, eurodeputatul ales pe listele UDMR a spus că „maghiarii ardeleni şi consorţii lor aparţinând altor minorităţi, în loc de promisa libertate naţională (n.b.: referire la Proclamația de la Alba Iulia, din 1918) au avut parte de cea mai cruntă asuprire posibilă. Acesta este, printre altele, motivul pentru care, în decursul unui secol, raportul iniţial echilibrat de 55:45% dintre majoritatea românească şi minorităţi, ca urmare a asimilării artificiale, a politicii de colonizare forţată şi a stimulării premeditate a emigrării minorităţilor, a ajuns la 80:20%”.
